How does it work?
Nu-Heat’s rainwater harvesting system utilizes rainwater collected from the roof through existing gutters and downpipes, passing it through a filtration system into a holding tank where it can be stored for around 20 days. Water is then drawn off via a pump passing through a series of filters to the required outlet as and when required.
The system will draw on the rainwater first, but in the event of an empty storage tank, the control unit will automatically switch to mains water supply (except Garden Pack).
The amount of water that can be harvested depends on average rainfall, the size of the roof and filter efficiency.
What are the main advantages?
An average person uses around 18,000 litres of water annually just to flush toilets and wash clothes, so from the environmental perspective of saving water, rainwater harvesting is a logical choice.
Nu-Heat’s rainwater harvesting system can replace 30–50% of the mains water consumption, making a significant difference to an average family’s water bills where a meter is fitted.
Benefits at a glance
Rainwater Harvesting:
- Is suitable for all non-potable domestic use
- Allows financial savings due to reduction of metered water usage.
- Improves environmental impact:
- Helps to reduce the amount of water flowing into surface drains and, therefore, the risk of localised flooding.
- Reduces demand on current under pressure water resources. - Can be used to achieve credits for the code for sustainable homes.
- Forms a key part of the Sustainable Drainage Scheme (SUDS).
- Can improve the overall BREEAM performance of a building.
- Can be installed in both new and existing buildings.
Convenience
The user-friendly Nu-Heat rainwater harvesting system incorporates the latest technology and is easy to install and maintain.
It has been developed to provide the homeowner with a 'fit-and-forget' system, ensuring an automatic supply of harvested rainwater.
Design
Whether it is from a cost saving, environmental or water management standpoint, Nu-Heat will evaluate the site conditions and supply an economic, user-friendly system tailored for your specific building application.
Nu-Heat will assess each project individually to ensure correct sizing of tanks, filters and control systems calculated on factors such as local rainfall, roof area, drainage efficiency and occupancy.
Nu-Heat system features
- Low profile tank – up to 40% less excavation for the same volume; allows installation in areas with a high water table
- Convenience – does not require heavy plant for lifting
- Silent running – pump located within the control unit (Domestic Pack 1) or in the tank (Domestic Pack 2)
- Minimum maintenance – filters are accessible and easy to clean and the control unit can be switched to manual mode to only use mains water during maintenance
- Control unit – with plumbing and electrical controls at a single point and incorporating a simulated digital water level display and system pressure and status indicators. The Domestic Pack 1 also has an integrated water storage tank, which automatically exchanges stored water every 30 days.
- Flexibility – 3,500 and 5,000 litre tanks available that can be linked
- Strength – tanks are moulded in a single piece for 100% water-tightness, high impact strength and mechanical stability and eliminating weak spots associated with welded, screwed or clamped joints. The tanks are moulded from high-density polyethylene with a constant wall thickness.
- Water quality is improved by the integration of:
- A filter – operating before water enters the tank
- A calmed inlet – preventing sediment being disturbed
- A floating suction module – water is drawn from just below the surface level where the water is cleanest
- An overflow siphon with rodent protection barrier – allowing floating material to be removed. - No requirement for a header tank in the loft.
- The garden package is not subject to hosepipe bans or other water restrictions.
- The tank benefits from a 10-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects.
Nu-Heat supplies a complete package of components comprising tank, control unit and filter.
